The First Day of Fall

It's the first day of fall here in the Midwest.  The angle of the sun and the feel of the breeze belies the thermometer in Elton the Explorer.  A few red leaves let us know that the days are getting shorter.  And at this stage of life the number of days are shorter, too.

Have you noticed that as you get a bit older, more vintage, that your perspective also has a different slant to it, just like the autumn sun?  So it's time to do things a bit differently, do things that make the days all that much more special.  So this week are are starting a new garden.  And it takes up most of the front yard. Yes, the front yard in our very suburban neighborhood.  The "lawn company"  sprayed for the last time about 8 weeks ago.  And totally burned out the grass and left the weeds.  We have tried to revive the lawn to no avail.  So 10 tons of topsoil with compost, several hundred dollars of bricks and timbers, and a lot of backaches has made a 3 section, tiered garden.

And now to get some plantings in before the cold.  We have bulbs, grape vines, blueberry bushes, and fig trees.  I managed to scrounge up some deer-nibbled strawberry plants, a few lavender plants, and pansies to get us through the winter.  And, of course, there will be a fairy garden, we will need a little magic.
The bones of the garden.

A baby fig!
